On a large purchase this is a meaningful sum, and it is one of the few line items that is genuinely not negotiable.

Delivery is priced by difficulty, not distance

Curbside delivery, delivery into a room and delivery up a flight of stairs are separate services, and only the first is included in most free delivery offers.

Access constraints move the price: narrow doorways, walk-up apartments, and anything requiring more than two people are all surcharges.

Because these are assessed against the actual address, a quote given without one is provisional. Measuring the path in before ordering avoids the version of this discovered on the doorstep.

Installation is a trade service with its own rules

Connecting an appliance to gas, water or a dedicated electrical circuit is licensed work in many jurisdictions, and the delivery crew may not be permitted to do it.

Installation quotes also assume the existing connections are compliant. A shutoff valve that does not hold or a receptacle of the wrong type turns a connection into a separate job.

Materials are usually excluded as well, so hoses, cords and fittings appear as small charges that were not in the original comparison.

Removal of the old unit is a disposal cost

Haul-away is priced separately because the retailer is paying to dispose of the old item, and disposal of anything containing refrigerant is regulated.

Some jurisdictions charge recycling fees at the point of sale for particular categories, and utilities occasionally run programs that go the other way and pay for old units.

Either way, the old appliance has to go somewhere, and leaving it in the garage is a decision with a cost that arrives later.

Permits and inspections belong in the total

Work involving gas, electrical or plumbing modification may require a permit and an inspection, and the fee is paid to the municipality rather than to the retailer.

These are usually modest against the purchase, and the reason to include them is that they identify work requiring a licensed trade rather than a delivery crew.

Comparing two products on their sticker prices when one needs a new circuit and the other does not is comparing the wrong pair of numbers.
